A useful podcast pitch gives the host a reason to invite you that goes beyond the fact that you have written a book. Start with the listeners: what conversation could you contribute that would be relevant, interesting and specific?
Build a short list with a clear fit
Listen to recent episodes before approaching a show. Note the audience, typical topics, guest format and any published submission guidance. A small list of suitable shows is easier to research properly than a large list built from titles alone.
Offer a conversation, not a sales script
Prepare two or three possible discussion angles. A nonfiction author might explain a practical problem explored in the book. A fiction author might discuss a researched setting, a creative decision or a theme that fits the show. Stay within your actual experience and do not imply qualifications you do not hold.
Keep the first message focused
Introduce yourself briefly, explain why this particular show is a fit, and suggest a concrete conversation. Include the book title and one useful link to an author or book page. Follow the show's instructions for attachments and submission length.
A simple structure is: “I listened to your episode about [specific topic]. My book explores [relevant connection], and I could discuss [two useful angles] with your audience. Here is a short introduction and book information: [link].” Replace every placeholder with researched details before sending.
Prepare your guest information
Have a short biography, accurate book description, author photo you have permission to use, and a page with current book links. Confirm your availability, microphone setup and recording environment. Ask the host which details they need rather than sending a large bundle without context.
Follow up respectfully
Track the date, contact route and response for each pitch. If the show gives a follow-up policy, use it. Otherwise, one brief follow-up after a reasonable interval can clarify whether the idea fits. Stop if the host declines or asks you not to contact them.
An appearance is an opportunity for a useful conversation; it does not guarantee sales or future invitations. If you need help preparing the approach, explore podcast and media outreach support.
